We are over the moon excited to announce that Dean Arsene has confirmed his attendance at our Hockey Marathon of Hope this year!!

To date, Arsene’s professional career has been almost solely in the American Hockey League, where he has played twelve seasons. He spent six of those seasons (from 2003–04 to 2008–09) with the Hershey Bears, winning the league’s championship Calder Cup twice in that tenure, and earning the fond nickname “Mayor of Chocolatetown.”

Following his second Calder Cup, Arsene chose to sign the two-way contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the hope of earning some playing time in the NHL on July 16, 2009.[1] That hope was realized when he was called up for a two-game stint in late 2009.[2] He spent the majority of the 2009–10 season as the captain of the Springfield Falcons, however he was again later recalled on an emergency basis on March 22, 2010, finishing out the season with Edmonton.

On August 11, 2010, Arsene signed as a free agent to a one-year, two-way contract with the St. Louis Blues.[3]

Arsene signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes on July 6, 2011.[4] He spent the entirety of the 2011–12 season, with AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates.

On August 9, 2012, Arsene agreed to a one-year American League contract with the St. John’s IceCaps.[5]

In his final professional season, Arsene returned home, signing a one-year contract with the Abbotsford Heat for the 2013–14 campaign. Arsene posted 7 points in 42 games before announcing his retirement upon the Heat’s first round exit in the playoffs on May 7, 2014.

Welcome to the Hockey Marathon of Hope Crew Dean, and hope you are ready to GET YOUR BURN ON this year :)

If you know hockey, you know Paul Henderson and His career defining “goal of the century” that he scored on September 28, 1972, to win the Summit Series for Canada. It was the most famous goal in Canadian hockey history, and was the defining moment for a generation of Canadians.

It is our honor at “Hockey Marathon of Hope” to be able to say that we have Paul’s personal endorsement and support for our event.

He was gracious enough to give us an incredible interview last year that we were able to record. Feel free to listen as you get a sense of the heart and passion behind what we do through our Marathon.

Dean is a Canadian born play who played for 18 years with 9 NHL teams. At the end of our day of hockey all of the players get a gourmet banquet and as part of the evenings program Dean shared his story of hockey passion, life and faith.

Consider that the No. 19 jersey he was wearing when he scored the game-winner in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union sold for $1.275 million at auction – the most expensive hockey jersey ever, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Henderson lends his name to an Abbotsford-based fundraiser known as the Hockey Marathon of Hope, and the seventh edition of the event runs on Sept. 8. While organizers Dave Currie and Geoff Lee aren’t under any illusions that they’ll generate the kind of funds Henderson’s jersey auction did, they believe the sport of hockey offers a unique opportunity.

“It feels like a natural fundraiser for Canadians,” Currie said. “You think about playing 10 hours straight, and it’s pretty fun for hockey nuts. And we’re excited about helping a lot of people in the process.”

Henderson has attended three of the previous Hockey Marathons of Hope in person, though he won’t be able to do so this year due to his ongoing battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“His cancer limits his schedule,” Currie noted. “He’s pretty positive about how he faces it. Every day is a day of grace, he says.

“We’ll likely do an interview over the phone which we’ll record, and he’ll give a word to the guys via audio. He’s sent us books of his life story and DVDs of the ’72 series to give to the guys.”

The event takes over the Centre Ice twin rinks facility, and players are divided into four teams for the marathon.

“Throughout the whole day, you’re treated like a professional athlete,” Lee said. “For guys who haven’t played much high-level hockey, it’s a fun atmosphere.”

Each participant commits to raising at least $1,000, which goes to Doing Family Right, a Christian ministry to strengthen families, and the Imani Orphan Care Foundation, which runs two facilities in Kenya housing over 250 children.

“I like to call it a balanced portfolio,” Currie said. “We’re helping at home, and we’re also helping overseas.”
